Ocean Geoengineering : Should we or not?
There is much talk in both science and media circles on geoengineering proposals to deliberately manipulate the Earth's climate to counteract the effects of global warming from greenhouse gas emissions. A number of oceanic geoengineering proposals have been put forward including ocean fertilisation, oceanic liming and the installation of ocean pipes. Some commentators have suggested that consideration of geoengineering is unhelpful because it threatens to reduce the political and popular pressure for emissions reduction. Others suggest that geoengineering proposals do not pose such a threat if considered in conjunction with emissions reductions. Many marine scientists conclude that much research is needed to make informed assessments on ocean geoengineering schemes while others remain vocal in their opposition.
